LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Showtime Networks is taking its 2008 Primetime Emmy(R) campaign online in a modern approach which provides members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS) an efficient and eco- friendly option to screen eligible programming for awards consideration. Working with Internet TV leader Brightcove Inc., they will deliver a customized Internet-based experience that allows voting members to view full seasons of Showtime's original series beginning February 15 and throughout the June balloting and final August judging phases. SHOWTIME is the first network to make entire seasons available to Academy members via the internet.

Showtime will utilize Brightcove's soon-to-be-released Internet TV service, "Brightcove Show," an innovative Internet TV application that delivers an instant, full screen, broadcast quality viewing experience direct to each member's computer through standard Web browsers. Showtime will send a brochure/mailer with program information and select episodes on three DVD's (down from 20 last year) along with a unique passcode that will allow access to an ATAS members only site, http://sho.com/foryourconsideration, to view full seasons of its signature original programming eligible for Primetime Emmy Award consideration.

Members will be able to stream complete current seasons of "Weeds," "Dexter," "Brotherhood," Californication," and "The L Word (R)". Shows that have yet to debut on the network --"The Tudors Season 2," "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union," "This American Life Season 2," and a new television film "An American Crime," starring Catherine Keener (CAPOTE) and Ellen Page (JUNO) -- will roll out throughout the campaign season as they become available.

"This year's Primetime Emmy campaign initiative was driven by a goal to create a new and unique way for voters to view Showtime's eligible programming anywhere in the U.S," said Richard Licata, Executive Vice President, Corporate Communications for Showtime. "Rob Hayes, Senior Vice President/General Manager, Showtime Digital Media, suggested we collaborate with the creative minds at Brightcove -- a win-win not only for Showtime and its programming but for the thousands who will enjoy this cutting edge TV/internet experience. This will eliminate the enormous amount of packaging which has inundated members and ultimately ends up in our landfills," he added.

"Showtime's rollout of Brightcove Show to support its 2008 Primetime Emmy Campaign is demonstrative of the network's continued willingness to push innovation on all fronts, from its original programming to the way it interacts with Academy members," said Jeremy Allaire, Brightcove Chairman and CEO. "This campaign is the latest extension of Brightcove and Showtime's ongoing relationship to deliver high quality web video to Showtime's broader online audience. We look forward to helping Showtime execute a successful Primetime Emmy campaign."

This initiative is the first in an overall working partnership between the two companies, which includes Showtime's use of Brightcove for the programming and distribution of video content on http://www.sho.com/, the network's official home on the Internet.

The new Showtime Emmy site will be live exclusively to Television Academy members as of February 15, 2008.

USA Weekend is interviewing Tracey tomorrow about her new Showtime series. The writer has seen the premiere episode and says, "I've seen the premiere, and can report that it's just as funny as you'd expect from Ullman. I can't wait to ask her about her apparent fascination with Ryan Seacrest (he's mentioned multiple times in the show)."

If you have your own questions for Trace, go and post them in the "comments" section. We've added our own.

"Union" Bits

Sunday, January 20, 2008 expat 0 Comments

  • A brand new promo, a "Showtime short", is currently airing on Showtime. In it, Tracey is interviewed about what she loves about America. Stills of some of the new series characters, flash across the screen. Two clips of Tracey in action as an Indian pharmacist, and Tracey as Arianna Huffington, are included. Look for it!
  • Prosthetic make-up artist for the series, Matthew Mungle, wrote the following in his site's January newsletter:

I have to say that I had a great time applying 7 different prosthetic make-ups on Tracey Ullman for her new show "State of the Union" back in October. She’s fantastic to work with! She’d start getting into all the characters as I began the applications, making me laugh so hard that I’d have to stop to compose myself – a very talented, funny lady! The 5 episodes will air starting in March on Showtime. Hopefully she'll make more episodes.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Emmy(R) Award-winner Tracey Ullman brings her signature brand of spot-on impersonation and comic timing to TRACEY ULLMAN'S STATE OF THE UNION, a new sketch comedy series that takes a satirical look at a day in the life of America. "I have always loved Tracey Ullman ever since I was a young development executive at Fox when she was doing the original 'Tracey Ullman Show,'" says Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. "She is a one-of-a-kind comedienne and sketch comedy performer, a true artist. We are so proud to bring her to SHOWTIME in a completely new show that will again showcase what she does best, and in this case, she will be looking at the wide cross-section of Americans and both celebrating us and sending us up."

TRACEY ULLMAN'S STATE OF THE UNION will feature a kaleidoscope of original characters and impersonations in a wide collection of irreverent and hilarious skits that range from sardonic parody and social satire to Bollywood musicals. The limited series is a snapshot of modern day America as seen through the brilliant comedic mind of Tracey Ullman. Tracey tackles the country's celebrity-obsessed, 24- hour news culture by portraying a variety of characters from celebrities such as Cameron Diaz, Renee Zellweger, Dina Lohan, Tony Sirico and David Beckham to politicians and pundits like Nancy Pelosi and Arianna Huffington. Additionally, Ullman has created a new line-up of original characters that reflect a cross-section of American society from an Indian pharmacist to a homeless woman without health insurance to a soldier on temporary leave from Iraq.

Allan McKeown and Tracey Ullman serve as executive producers for the series. Bruce Wagner and Gail Parent serve as producers. The series is produced by Shawn Wilts and Troy Miller serves as director.

'State of the Union' will premiere after 'The Tudors' on March 30

Tracey Ullman of 'Tracey Ullman's State of the Union'

Showtime has set a March premiere for "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union," a new sketch comedy show from the Emmy-winning performer.

"State of the Union" is being presented as a limited series, with the first of five half-hour episodes kicking off on Sunday, March 30 at 10 p.m. ET.

That sets the new Ullman series, in which she plays a number of different characters in presenting a day in the life of America, up to premiere after the second season launch of "The Tudors" in a new 9 p.m. ET time slot.

In addition to playing original characters, Ullman's assortment of impersonations ranges from A-list stars like Cameron Diaz and Renee Zellweger to politicians like Nancy Pelosi to odder celebs like David Beckham and Tony Sirico.

"I have always loved Tracey Ullman ever since I was a young development executive at Fox when she was doing the original 'Tracey Ullman Show,'" says Showtime Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt. "She is a one-of-a-kind comedienne and sketch comedy performer, a true artist. We are so proud to bring her to Showtime in a completely new show that will again showcase what she does best, and in this case, she will be looking at the wide cross-section of Americans and both celebrating us and sending us up."
