About that Birthday Bash Knitting Party

Tuesday, December 30, 2008 expat 0 Comments

We've learned that it was just a name given to the meet-up. Tracey's a fellow knitter. They thought it'd be a good theme. Sorry for those who attended and misunderstood, as we did, although, you could still learn a thing or two about stitching a thing or two, as taught in Tracey's hit book, Knit 2 Together.

EVENT: Tracey's Birthday Bash?

Sunday, December 28, 2008 expat 1 Comments

Apparently, a birthday party is occurring for Tracey in Raleigh, NC, on December 30, 2008 (Tracey's birthday) at 6:30PM .

Same location on a Tuesday night. Come out, relax, have a cup of coffee, knit & chat. New knitters are welcome!* Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday and be sure to bring any finished projects for show & tell! Happy Birthday to Tracey Ullman, comedienne, fellow knitter, and co-author of Knit 2 Together: Patterns and Stories for Serious Knitting Fun! *If you're new to knitting, we'd be glad to teach you how to knit and get you started on your first project. A garter stitch scarf is a good beginner project. Bring with you either 1) a Bulky weight yarn, such as Lion Brand Wool-Ease Chunky, and size 10 straight knitting needles or 2) a Worsted (medium) weight yarn, such as Lion Brand Wool-Ease, and size 8 straight knitting needles. (The yarns above are suggested because they are relatively easy to find in any craft store, and even Wal-mart, and they are relatively inexpensive, but any bulky or worsted weight yarn will do. Just check the label and make sure to get the corresponding needle size for the yarn weight listed above.) Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions before the meeting.
So, if you want tickets, directions, and want to learn how to knit with (possibly) Tracey (awaiting confirmation), click here.

Review

Nice review of the "State of the Union" DVD in the latest SoHo Journal.

Tracey Ullman: State of the Union
DVD
Eagle Media
Produced by SHOWTIME
US $26.99
150 minutes

Tracey Ullman shot to international fame in the early days of the FOX network. Back then we were treated to an insane number of crazy characters created by Ms. Ullman, delivered tirelessly week after week. It should also be noted that The Tracey Ullman Show was the birthplace of The Simpsons. Those familiar with the comedian’s style already know her bitingly acerbic aesthetic, her penchant for characterization, her blatant disregard for societal norms and her overall anything-goes mentality.

Back then, Ullman was still a citizen of the United Kingdom. A lot has changed and she’s now one of us, a lazy American. And now that she is one of us she has set aside (temporarily we hope) the kooky Korean woman, the gun loving Texas housewife, Horny Turkish cabbie and a slew of others. This time around she has set her laser-like sights on the likes of Cameron Diaz, Renee Zellwegger, Helen Mirren, David Beckham and many others unlucky enough to encounter her pinpricks of satire.

The over 30 minutes of bonus features include blooper and out-take reels, screen tests with Tracey’s unique commentaries, a “Making Of” featurette, and extra material not seen in the show, including deleted scenes. I could never understand why this woman isn’t a bigger star; she’s a huge talent and this is a must have for all lovers of comedy.

Tedd Thomey 1920-2008

Tuesday, December 16, 2008 expat 0 Comments

Writer Tedd Thomey, died last week at the age of 88. Thomey wrote the now cult classic novel, "The Big Love", dictated to him by Florence Aadland. Aadland's daughter, Beverly, an actress, had a scandalous underaged affair with Hollywood legend, Errol Flynn.

The novel contains the infamous opening line: "Now, I want to make one thing clear right off: my baby was a virgin the day she met Errol Flynn."

The book was translated to the stage in 1991. Tracey portrayed Florence, regaling the story of her daughter and old Hollywood. It seems to be believed that Florence is in part the inspiration for the Hollywood makeup artist character, Ruby Romaine, in Tracey's HBO series "Tracey Takes On..."

We've caught quite a number of impersonations of Tracey's characters via Youtube, and one impersonation that keeps popping up in articles, debated upon who does a better version, and even causes contests between Tracey herself and others, is Arianna Huffington, the blooog queen extraordinaire. Tracey's Arianna is a regular in her hit Showtime comedy series, Tracey Ullman's State of the Union.

We were pretty blown away by this current impersonation of an impersonation by Youtube user: streepfan06.

Check it out:

UPDATE: streepfan06 recreates Asma Kasim.

streepfan06 is obviously about to become, "the biggest star of Youtube"!

UPDATE: streepfan06 continues to astound us. She's making news, and breaking news! We present to you, the real Rita Cosby...

Carl Reiner honored at Paley Gala

No ' lousy, juicy stories to tell' about the industry veteran

By Kimberly Nordyke

Dec 12, 2008, 05:30 AM ET

Carl Reiner is a kind and "normal" person, while Showtime Networks has built a successful business by pushing the envelope.

Those were the sentiments expressed by a parade of stars paying tribute to the actor-writer-director-producer and the premium cable service Thursday night during the Paley Center for Media's Los Angeles gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

The Paley galas sometimes turn into a bit of a roast for the people being honored, but Lily Tomlin, who co-starred in Reiner's "All of Me," perhaps summed up the sentiments of all those who paid tribute to Reiner when she said: "He's talented and normal and creates a great working environment, which means I don't have any lousy, juicy stories to tell."

She did tell a sweet story of going to see Reiner's wife, Estelle, perform at a jazz club, where she observed Reiner on his "hands and knees" helping to set up for her show.

"That shot Carl sky-high in my heart," she said.

Reiner's son, actor-writer-director-producer Rob Reiner, said he idolized his dad when he was younger and pointed out that his father was on television before he even owned a television. He told of how the elder Reiner would send him and his siblings secret messages at the end of 1950s series "Your Show of Shows."

"He would tell us, 'I can't see you, but you can see me,' " Rob Reiner said. "Every Saturday night, he would bow goodbye and he'd tell us, 'I want you to know I'm there.' So he'd touch his tie, and that meant, 'I love you,' and that it was time for us to go to bed."

Carl Reiner regaled the crowd with a rant about the "awful" food served at the gala and a touching remembrance of his wife, who died in October. Of the late singer-actress, eight years his senior, he joked that he was like Ashton Kutcher, who married the 16-years-older Demi Moore.

The 86-year-old also said he'd been working in TV since 1948, getting his start on a show called "The Fifty-Fourth Street Revue," but he never imagined the then-upstart medium would grow into what it has today.

"I was under contract, and I got an offer to do Broadway," he said. "I asked if I could buy my way out of the contract. I didn't realize how important TV would become."

After leaving the stage, Reiner recruited audience member Mel Brooks for an audience-pleasing impromptu reprisal of their classic routine "The 2000 Year Old Man."

Also honored during the event, hosted by Bonnie Hunt, were Showtime chairman/CEO Matthew Blank and president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt.

"Weeds" co-stars Elizabeth Perkins and Justin Kirk said Showtime, after it launched in 1976, became a place for storytelling and characters not normally seen elsewhere on TV with shows like "Resurrection Blvd." (centering on Latinos), "Soul Food" (African-Americans), "Queer as Folk" (gay characters) and "The L Word" (lesbians).

"Showtime became a powerful microphone for often marginalized voices to entertain, inform and be heard," Perkins said.

Blank and Greenblatt did take some ribbing from Showtime talent during a video, in which Tim Robbins (the pilot "Possible Side Effects") congratulated the network for being honored for its "excellent lesbian programming," while Ira Glass ("This American Life") joked that when he first met Blank, he noticed a striking physical similarity to the boss from Reiner's "The Dick Van Dyke Show," Mel Cooley (Richard Deacon).

Onstage, Tracey Ullman ("State of the Union") cracked a joke about Showtime's "The Tudors," saying that, attending school as a youngster in England, she believed that King Henry VIII was "fat and bald. But when he's being brought to you in the 21st century by premium cable, he's Jonathan Rhys Meyers."

In his remarks, Blank paid tribute to Reiner, saying he was convinced his late mother never understood what he did for a living but would have been proud of his being honored on the same stage as the film and TV legend.

Of his job, he said: "We get to break a lot of rules, create unique and different programming and have a lot of fun."

Greenblatt, meanwhile, referred to the "golden age" of television and said he believes that this is the "new golden age in cable. We're allowed to do things nobody is allowed to do and push the envelope."

NEW FILM: "The Tale Of Despereaux"

Wednesday, December 10, 2008 expat 0 Comments

Small Mouse. Big Dreams.
Opens in theaters December 19, 2008!

The Tale Of Despereaux is based on the 2003, award-winning book of the same title, by Kate DiCamillo.

Trailer

Plot

Tiny and graced with oversized ears, Despereaux was born too big for his little world. Refusing to live his life cowering, he befriends a Princess named Pea and learns to read (rather than eat) books -- reveling in stories of knights, dragons and fair maidens. Banished from Mouseworld for being more man than mouse, Despereaux is rescued by another outcast, Roscuro, who also wants to hear the tales. But when the Princess dismisses Roscuro's friendship, he becomes the ultimate rat and plots revenge with fellow outsider Mig. After Pea is kidnapped, Despereaux discovers he is the only one who can rescue her...and that even the tiniest mouse can find the courage of a knight in shining armor.

Author

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Despereaux author, Kate DiCamillo suffered from chronic pneumonia. At age 5, she moved from Philadelphia to Clermont, Florida for her health with her mother and older brother, Curt DiCamillo, who would become a noted architectural historian. Her mother was a teacher. Her father stayed behind to sell his orthodontic practice and never rejoined the family in Florida.

DiCamillo majored in English at the University of Florida and worked various jobs after graduation until moving to Minneapolis at age 30. She began writing there around working in a book warehouse, where she met a sales representative for Candlewick Press and submitted a draft of what would become Because of Winn-Dixie.

Her 2003 novel The Tale of Despereaux was inspired by a friend's son who asked her to write a story about an unlikely hero with "exceptionally large ears".

DiCamillo lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Mig
gery Sow

Tracey's voices the character, Miggery Sow, or 'Mig' for short. She is the maid of the castle. She longs to be a princess, just like Princess Pea. She is frequently caught trying Princess Pea's crown on, envisioning herself taking the Princess' place. She is very obese.
